Derek Sivers
Derek Sivers is a musician and entrepreneur best recognized as the creator of CD Baby, the world's largest online music distribution firm. Sivers was born in Long Beach, California on September 22, 1969. He began his career as a guitarist after studying music at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He then studied singing, composition, piano, songwriting, music synthesis, and production, becoming a self-described "everything guy"
Sivers began working as a professional musician and circus clown in 1987, playing at numerous locations around the United States and Europe. He unintentionally established CD Baby in 1998 while selling his own CD on his website and friends requested if he could sell theirs as well. With $100 million in sales for 150,000 musicians, the firm went on to become the largest online vendor of independent music.
Sivers sold CD Baby for $22 million in 2008, and the revenues went to a nonprofit organization for music education. He has now pursued other commercial endeavors, including the establishment of Wood Egg, a firm that produces annual guides to conducting business in several nations.
